This chapter illustrates the inadequacy of the term \u2018informality\u2019 by applying two categories\u00a0of socio-spatial analysis: origin stories and urban outcomes. Densification (and de-densification)\u00a0is a historical process of urbanisation \u2013 an area\u2019s origin story \u2013 that produces socially\u00a0constructed spaces \u2013 urban outcomes \u2013 in the built environment.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
A comparative exploration\u00a0into these processes in Alexandra and Marlboro South reveals significant differences in the\u00a0material, regulatory and social spaces of the settlements. Alexandra has a complex urban\u00a0morphology, multiple forms of land tenure, and a deeply rooted diversity of powerful social\u00a0structures and spaces. Marlboro South may appear to have a similar morphology, but its forms\u00a0arose according to a different logic, resulting in distinct social densities and lived spaces, as\u00a0well as considerably more precarious tenure and higher levels of exclusion. These differentiations\u00a0matter in the interpretation of density, and suggest trading the term informality for more\u00a0specific descriptors of the processes of densification themselves (Schmid 2015). Such specificity\u00a0is particularly important because capital investment is anticipated in both areas under the\u00a0City of Johannesburg\u2019s (CoJ) current development initiatives.<\/p>\n
