La professeure de planification urbaine \u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9 de Harvard Susan Fainstein met ainsi au d\u00e9fi les th\u00e9ories de planification \u2013 et aussi la conception architecturale et urbaine \u2013 d\u2019\u00e9tudier ces relations: comment l\u2019intervention et l\u2019impl\u00e9mentation impactent le contexte (urbain), les usagers (de la ville) et leurs relations sociales (Fainstein 2010). Comme le font ressortir ses recherches, les urbanistes et architectes interviennent dans un contexte marqu\u00e9 par la concurrence, avec des valeurs et des int\u00e9r\u00eats souvent contradictoires. Ce qui semble b\u00e9n\u00e9fique \u00e0 une ville, \u00e0 un quartier ou \u00e0 une rue peut ne pas l\u2019\u00eatre pour la ville et inversement. Ou bien ce qui semble \u00eatre une conception satisfaisante peut s\u2019av\u00e9rer impossible \u00e0 r\u00e9aliser. De m\u00eame, des processus d\u00e9mocratiques bien organis\u00e9s peuvent avoir des cons\u00e9quences inqui\u00e9tantes. Ce projet de recherche examine le concepteur en architecture et en urbanisme comme un \u00abexpert\u00bb activement impliqu\u00e9 dans les processus de transformation, de maintenance et d\u2019intervention dans le \u00abmonde en commun\u00bb, un terme emprunt\u00e9 \u00e0 Hannah Arendt qui soulignait non seulement le caract\u00e8re commun du monde, mais aussi sa mat\u00e9rialit\u00e9 en tant qu\u2019entre-deux, \u00e0 la fois s\u00e9parant et rassemblant les \u00eatres humains (Arendt 1958). Le projet de recherche aborde les diff\u00e9rents aspects de l\u2019expertise (analyse, prise de d\u00e9cision, r\u00e9solution de probl\u00e8me, imagination, dessin, mod\u00e9lisation, etc.) comme autant de moyens d\u2019engagement (politique, culturel, sociale, esth\u00e9tique) dans ce monde en commun.
