During colonial times, the Spanish crown established the Indigenous resguardo (reserve) as a form of collective land tenure to \u201cprotect,\u201d meaning to contain and control, Indigenous Peoples. Today, this is still the only form used by the state and international organizations to formally recognize Indigenous territory.
