How can urban design steer the impacts of technological disruptions in the transport sector?<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In recent times, the transportation sector has experienced a series of technological disruptions, from the rapid developments in vehicle automation to the meteoric rise of ride-sharing and ride-hailing apps around the world. There is enormous uncertainty surrounding how these technologies will play out in the long term. This uncertainty has been compounded by one of the most disruptive event in recent times, the COVID-\u200b19 pandemic, which has impacted all areas of urban life, including the transportation sector, at an unprecedented scale. Although we cannot predict the impacts of these disruptions (technological and otherwise) in the long term on cities, urban design and planning can play a strong role in steering their impacts.<\/p>\n

In this webinar, Tanvi Maheshwari (Future Cities Laboratory), Prof. Stephen Marshall (The Bartlett School of Planning, UCL) and Prof. Kay W. Axhausen (ETH Zurich, FCL) discuss what technological developments in transportation sector mean for urban design and planning of future cities. Key findings from Tanvi Maheshwari recently concluded her PhD thesis on \u2018Urban Design and the Technological Shift in Transportation\u2019 as part of the Engaging Mobility project at FCL, will be discussed. The discussion will be chaired by Prof. Stephen Cairns, programme director of the FCL.<\/p>\n
