Explicated in texts, drawings and models or tacitly defined as compositional principles, typological choices or construction modes, these codes and conventions represent a specific conception of the city and urbanity. During the twentieth century we have been inculcated with the idea that urban norms and forms are articulated by either the state or the market, and are thus either exclusively public or private.
